Call us

Getting your first massage can feel a little nerve-wracking — especially if you're not sure what to wear, what to say, or what's going to happen when you walk through the door. That uncertainty is completely normal, and we hear it from new clients all the time.

The good news? By the end of your first session at the Pittsburgh Center for Complementary Health and Healing, most first-timers tell us they can't believe they waited so long to try it.

This guide walks you through everything — from how to book, to what happens in the room, to how you might feel afterward — so you can arrive relaxed, informed, and ready to get the most out of your experience.

Before Your Appointment

Step 1: Book the Right Service for You

If you're not sure where to start, our Customized Massage is the perfect first session. It's designed to be fully tailored to your needs — your therapist will work with you to determine the right pressure, focus areas, and techniques. You don't have to know anything about massage types going in.

If you're dealing with specific pain or tension, mention it when you book. If you're interested in incorporating energy healing, reiki, hot stones or CBD into your session, let us know — we can suggest the right combination for you. You can book online at pghhealthandhealing.com or call us at (412) 242-4220.

Step 2: What to Do Before You Arrive

A little preparation goes a long way toward having a great first session:

  • Drink water beforehand. Hydration helps your muscles respond better to massage and supports the release of tension.

  • Avoid a heavy meal in the hour or two before your session. A light snack is fine.

  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early for your first visit. This gives you time to fill out a brief intake form, use the restroom and settle in before your session begins.

  • Avoid applying perfumes to your skin before arriving.

  • Let us know in advance about any health conditions, injuries, medications, or areas you'd like us to avoid. This helps your therapist customize your session safely.

When You Arrive at Our Regent Square Studio

Step 3: Walking In

Our studio is located at 1124 South Braddock Avenue, Suite B, in Pittsburgh's Regent Square neighborhood. https://www.pghhealthandhealing.com/spa-massage-location-regent-square

If you look up we have two huge windows on the second floor facing S Braddock Ave in the main business district. The entrance is under a black awning next to Hemlock House you will come upstairs and we are the first door on the left— look for Suite B. From the moment you step inside our walls, you'll notice the atmosphere is calm and intentional. The space is designed to feel like a sanctuary, not a clinical waiting room.

You'll be greeted warmly and invited to relax while your therapist prepares for your session.

Step 4: Your Intake Consultation

Before every session — especially your first — your Licensed Massage Therapist will sit with you for a brief consultation. This is one of the things that sets us apart from many other Pittsburgh massage studios, and it matters more than you might think.

During this conversation, your therapist will ask about:

  • Your health history and any current conditions or injuries

  • Areas of your body that need extra attention or should be avoided

  • Your pressure preferences — light, medium, firm, or deep

  • What you're hoping to get out of the session — relaxation, pain relief, stress reduction, or something else

  • Any experience you've had with massage before

This isn't just paperwork — it's how we make sure your session is genuinely customized to you. Please be honest and thorough in your answers. Everything you share is confidential.

During Your Session

Step 5: Getting on the Table

Your therapist will show you to a private, quiet room and explain how to get onto the table. They will then step out to give you complete privacy to undress to your comfort level and get settled under the sheet and blanket.

A common first-timer question: how undressed do I need to be? The answer is: only as much as you are comfortable with. Most clients undress fully or to their underwear, but you are never required to remove more than you're comfortable with. Your therapist is trained in professional draping techniques — only the area being worked on is ever uncovered, and your privacy is protected at all times.

💬 Good to know: You are always in control of your session. If at any point you want more or less pressure, want to skip an area, need a break for the restroom, or want to stop entirely — just say so. Your therapist will never be offended. We are here to support you. Speaking up is encouraged and helps you get the most from your time.

Step 6: What the Session Feels Like

Your therapist will knock before re-entering and check in with you as the session begins. They'll work through your body using techniques appropriate to your goals and preferences — adjusting in real time based on your feedback and how your body responds.

All of our sessions at the Pittsburgh Center for Complementary Health and Healing include:

  • Our boiance float massage table, which provides a gently heated, supportive surface that deepens relaxation

  • Warm neck rolls placed under your neck for comfort and tension relief

  • Therapeutic-grade aromatherapy selected based on your session goals — all included at no extra charge

Most clients find themselves deeply relaxed within the first few minutes. It's completely normal to drift in and out of sleep. Some clients experience an emotional release — tears, laughter, or a wave of relief — especially if they carry a lot of stress or tension in their body. This is healthy and welcome.

If you want to talk during your session, that's fine. If you prefer silence, that's equally welcome. Follow your body's lead.

Step 7: If the Pressure Isn't Right

Please tell your therapist immediately if the pressure is too much or too little. This is one of the most important things a first-timer can do. Many people hesitate to speak up because they don't want to seem difficult — but your therapist genuinely wants to know. Getting the pressure right makes the difference between a good session and a great one.  Also, if your therapist finds “the spot” that is causing you pain, communicating that can help for you to get the relief that you are looking for in a session.

After Your Session

Step 8: The Post-Session Check-In

At the end of your session, your therapist will gently let you know it's time to come back to the room. They'll step out to give you privacy to dress, then return for a brief check-in.

This is another thing that sets us apart: we take time after every session to hear how you're feeling and share observations from the session. Your therapist may note areas of particular tension, and can make notes on likes or dislikes that you may have so that you continue to deepen your experience with each session. Be sure to check out our at home self care selection and ask for their recommendation on session frequency based on your goals.

Often clients who have specific goals for pain relief will come weekly or every two weeks to start and then space their sessions more once they experience relief.

If your schedule requires a specific day or time to best fit into your routine we recommend scheduling a few months at a time or even ask for a standing session time.  Making your well-being a priority is way easier if it is already on your calendar!

Step 9: How You Might Feel

First-timers sometimes wonder why they feel a little tired, groggy, or even slightly sore after a massage — especially if it was a deeper session. This is completely normal and typically passes within 24 hours. Think of it like a gentle workout for your muscles and nervous system.

Most clients report feeling:

  • Deeply relaxed and calm, sometimes for days afterward

  • Lighter — as if tension they'd been carrying for weeks has finally released

  • Clearer mentally and more present

  • Occasionally a little tired or tender in areas that were worked deeply

To support your body after your session:

  • Drink plenty of water — this is the single most important thing you can do after a massage

  • Avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day if possible

  • Take either a warm bath or shower or apply a cool ice pack if you feel any mild soreness

  • Rest if you feel sleepy — your body is doing important work

Common First-Timer Questions

Do I have to talk during my massage?

Not at all. Many clients prefer complete silence and find it easier to relax without conversation. Others enjoy chatting with their therapist. Both are perfectly fine — follow whatever feels right to you.

What if I fall asleep?

Falling asleep during a massage is actually a compliment — it means your nervous system has fully let go and entered a state of deep relaxation. Your therapist will simply continue working and gently wake you at the end of the session.

What if I'm self-conscious about my body?

Our therapists have worked with bodies of every shape, size, age, and ability. We create a space that is safe, inclusive, and completely non-judgmental. You are welcome here exactly as you are. This also means don’t apologize if you haven’t shaved your legs. We are paying attention to what your body is telling us and what is happening under the skin. We want you to love your body! The only thing we ask is that you arrive clean and sanitary.

How often should I get a massage?

For general wellness and stress relief, once a month is a great starting point. For chronic pain, injury recovery, or high stress, more frequent sessions — every one to two weeks — may be recommended. Your therapist will discuss this with you during your post-session check-in.

Can I add energy healing to my first massage?

Absolutely. Many clients choose to incorporate Reiki or energy work into their massage session, especially if they're carrying emotional stress alongside physical tension. Just mention your interest when booking and we'll recommend the best option for you.
